Missed Period
Dear Both Ends: I am freaking out. I am 7 days late for my period. I usually get my period on
time and never missed any. I was at a party last month and we all went in the hot tub. One
thing led to another and I had unprotected sex with a few guys. I wasn’t the only girl there;
there were 3 others as well as 6 guys. I am too young to be pregnant plus there’s the fact that I
don’t know who [sic] the father would be. My parents would kill me. I am panicking. Help me.
Stacey, age 17, never married, no children, student, lives at home.
Dr. Gomes: First be sure that you are pregnant. You can either purchase a home pregnancy test
or contact the nearest Planned Parenthood agency. Hopefully, you have a close friend with whom
you can confide. You should not have to face this alone. Find out what are your medical rights.
Different states have different laws regarding parent notification laws and medical rights
procedures. I hope that your parents will support you even if they are very disappointed and
angry with you. It seems to me that your initial thought is not to keep this baby based on your
comment that you are too young to be pregnant. There are several options and it is important
that you are aware of both sides of this personal crisis. Aside from the medical issues with
pregnancy, you will want to discuss the ethical and religious impact of your decision to either keep
this baby or terminate this pregnancy. Blessings to you.
Suggestion: Call Planned Parenthood to discuss your options. For medical questions, or to
schedule an appointment with the nearest Planned Parenthood health center, call toll-free
1-800-230-PLAN or 1-800-230-7526.
Larry Star: Hey, Stace, can you let me know when the next party is? All kidding aside, you are
much too young to be a mom. Take it one step at a time. First you need to find out if you
actually are pregnant. If you are not pregnant, I hope this teaches you a lesson in the necessity
for birth control. It’s ok to be sexually active if you are responsible about it. If you are pregnant,
you need to get counseling as soon as possible to help you deal with informing your parents as well
as give you options and guidance with which to make an informed decision.
Suggestion: Listen to Madonna’s, “Poppa Don’t Preach.”
Both Ends: We agree Planned Parenthood would make an excellent bedfellow.
